Happy New Year families!
I hope you all enjoyed your holiday break. This is our first full week back, and it will sure be a busy one!
Please remember that all jackets worn in the building must be solid tan, navy, white, grey, or black. Our class room fluctuates between chilly and very warm, so I would recommend wearing layers to school.
Progress reports will be sent home this Wednesday in your child's yellow folder. Please take the time to review it with your child and discuss their accomplishments and goals for the remainder of the school year. As always, if you have any questions or concerns please e-mail me to schedule a conference. The parent coffee and 2nd quarter awards assembly will be Thursday morning. I will let you know by Wednesday if your child is receiving an award.
2012-2013 pre-registration forms were sent home last week and must be returned by Friday to hold your child's spot at Campus School for next year.
We have a lot of openings for mystery reader this semester. If you are interested in reading to the class, please visit the wiki to sign up. Mystery Readers usually share one or two books between lunch and recess (at 11:30), but the times are flexible. If 11:30 doesn't work for your schedule, please indicate what time you would like to read on the wiki.
This week in reading, we will continue our Magic Treehouse book clubs. Students will either be reading the story Midnight on the Moon or its nonfiction companion, Space. Our comprehension skills will vary chapter to chapter, but we will be using the many comprehension strategies we have learned this year. In spelling, our skill is the "uh" sound that oo and u make in the words book and sun. In grammar, we will continue working with adjectives.
Our book clubs closely related to our unit study unit on space. This week we learn about the sun's position in the sky and role in our solar system. Throughout our book clubs we will learn about even more objects in the sky before taking a closer look at the moon next week.
Our math focus for the week is geometry. Last week, we reviewed plane (flat) shapes and learned that these shapes make the faces on many solid (3D) shapes. This week, we will look at how to combine and take shapes apart, learn about lines of symmetry, and recognize and draw shapes that are congruent. We will also resume math fact testing this week. Some students have completed their ice cream sundae's and will move onto multiplication facts this week. Please make sure that you are reviewing math facts nightly with your child.
