Weekly News 11/26

Hi Families! I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving break! The next three weeks are the final stretch of the semester before Winter Break. I will be out Thursday & Friday presenting at a literacy conference in San Diego.

We have been busy since our last blog post.

We finished reading The Candy Corn Contest and Katie won our class' contest.

We spent hard-earned tickets for a show and tell.

We learned to help our classmates revise their how-to writing.

And of course we kept reading, reading, reading!

We have also all been busy blogging. You can read all our writing here and feel free to leave us a comment!

Here are some upcoming events:

  • Friday, Nov. 30th- Field trip permission slips due
  • Monday, Dec 3rd- Holiday Card Assembly @ 1:30
  • Tuesday, Dec 4th- Ms. Goelitz's lsat day of the semester, Scholastic Book orders due
  • Wednesday, Dec 5th- Field trip to IMAX & Cici's Pizza
  • Friday, Dec 14th- Our Family Gathering, Holiday Brunch party, noon dismissal
This week in language arts the students will be reading Anansi Goes Fishing. The comprehension skill is author's purpose. The students will also identify examples of cause and effect throughout the story. Author's write to either entertain, persuade, or inform. The spelling skill is compound words. You will also notice that each compound word also reviews our recent spelling patterns (long a, long o, long i, or long e).

We will begin economics in unit study. To begin, the students will differentiate between needs and wants. Then we will move on to goods and services and end the week by talking about producers and consumers.

In math the students will move on to mental subtraction. We will subtract tens mentally and then on a hundreds board. The students will have their timed tests on Tuesday and Thursday as usual. Please make sure you practice at home nightly to build math fact fluency.
