We will celebrate tomorrow with a variety of activities that focus on the number 100! Our 100 year-old first graders will even get a special visit from Zero the Hero! Check the blog tomorrow for pictures of this big event.
This week in reading we will read Frog and Toad Together. Our comprehension focus is plot, but we will also be comparing and contrasting different Frog and Toad stories. In grammar, we will meet Verb Girl, our special action hero that helps us remember that verbs are full of ACTION! We will focus on verbs in past and present tenses. Our spelling skill this week is inflected and comparative endings. Inflected endings, -ed and -ing, help us tell if the verb happened in the past or present. Comparative endings, -er and -est, compare things. Remember, that if the base word ends with a single vowel followed by a consonant (big) you have to double the last consonant before adding an ending (bigger, biggest).
In unit study, we will begin our study of famous Americans. The students loved learning all bout all of Dr. King's important contributions last week. Now, we will begin learning about a some of our first presidents and other important Americans that helped to shape our country.
In math, we will make the switch from counting coins to learning to tell time. Did you know that these important skills are very similar because they both require a foundation in skip counting? Both skills are also very easy to practice at home! Please continue to practice these skills as well as addition and subtraction facts on a regular basis.
