We had a great time learning about Groundhog's Day last week. We made predictions on whether Phil would see his shadow or not, and guess what? We were correct! We really hope we get some snow in the next six weeks of winter!
This week in unit study we will finish our Famous American presentations. I posted the PowerPoints that the students created on our classroom wiki for you to see. Each group will present Tuesday or Wednesday. After we finish with our Famous Americans, we will be exploring communities!
In reading this week, we will connect our reading selection to our unit on comunities as we read a story about community helpers called Who Works Here. We will be thinking about the author's purpose as we read and will compare the author's purpose of several stories. It helps us to remember the 3 main purposes for wriitng if we think about eating a PIE....to persaude, to inform, and to entertain. You better watch out though, your child might come home trying to persaude you! In spelling, we will meet mean 'ole bossy R! The R is known for bossing around the vowels and not letting them make their own sound. We will focus on the or and ar sounds this week. Remember, if the word ends with or, it is usually followed by an e. In grammar, we will be learning about the tricky be verbs. They aren't full of action like other verbs, but they still help us write complete sentences.
In math this week we will be learning to measure length. We will focus on nonstandard units and the standard units of inches, feet, and centimeters. Students will need to have a ruler handy to complete this week's homefun!
