Weekly News 8/13

Thank you again to all the parents who were able to attend parent night this past Thursday. I have uploaded the PowerPoint on the previous post for you to review throughout the year. 

I can't believe it is already the third week of school! We have jumped right in and the students are enthusiastically adjusting to new expectations and routines in second grade. We are sad that the Olympics are over, but we've had fun graphing USA's medals every day. 

This week in reading we will finish reading Get Ready for Second Grade, Amber Brown. Our class will compare and contrast Amber's teacher, Ms. Light, to me, Ms. Thompson! This week the students will work independently on grid activities of their choice that review the story. 

This week kicks off a new routine in spelling as we review short vowel sounds. Every Monday we will have a spelling pre-test. This pre-test will determine which spelling list your child will study for the week. We will note on the newsletter which list your child will practice. The two lists are at different levels; however they focus on the same phonics skills. Additionally, each student will write a dictated sentence including both spelling and high frequency words for the week. This sentence will be assessed for spelling and writing mechanics.

In unit study, we will finish learning about the brain by taking a closer look at how messages are sent through the wiring and firing of our axons and dendrites. In math, we will order and compare numbers and do some critical thinking with the 100's chart! 

Campus School’s Entertainment Book fundraiser is one of our biggest fundraisers of the year! Entertainment Books went home last week, and must be paid for or returned by August 24. Students who return the coupon for selling 5 books by August 15 will receive a special prize. All checks must be made out to U of M Campus School Courtesy Fund.
