Weekly News 8/15

I really appreciate all the parents that came for Parent Night on Thursday. I hope that many of you had your questions answered and feel comfortable with Campus School's and our classroom's procedures and expectations. If you have any questions left unanswered feel free to email me. This week students will receive their planners. Spelling words, behavior communication and other notes can be found and written in these. Be sure to sign and return these daily.

I did forget to mention that the blue behavior sheet should be signed and returned. If you have misplaced your copy, please let me know so I can copy another one. This is a good paper to keep as a reference throughout the year.

This week in the classroom we will begin a structured literacy time. You will notice on the newsletter that the students have 10 spelling words, 3 high frequency words, and 1 vocabulary word this week. The expectation is that your child can spell the spelling words, recognize the high frequency words (or Dolch sight words) without sounding them out, and know the meaning of the vocabulary word. All of these skills will be taught throughout the week and will be a focus in our weekly story.

We will test our spelling knowledge each Friday. Students are expected to know the 10 words by the end of the week. Remember, since these words all follow a similar pattern, learning to spell them will also help help in reading! Students will also be given 3 secret bonus words that follow our spelling pattern and can earn an ES by correctly spelling these words.

In reading, we will read the story Sam, Come Back! Our comprehension focus is character. Our spelling skill is the short a vowel and the ending -ck. Students will recognize that when the vowel a is found between two consonants it usually makes the short a sound as in the word cat. We will also practice the ending -ck sound. Our grammar skill is complete sentences. Complete sentences begin with a capital letter, have a punctuation mark and has a naming part (subject) and telling part (predicate).

This week in unit study students will explore the environment with their senses. They will recognize what part of the brain controls the different senses and get to explore each sense.

In math this week, we will finish up Chapter 2 on number concepts to 20 and test on Tuesday. Then we begin investigating addition properties in Chapter 3. Students will discover the different ways to make 6, 7, and 8.
