Weekly News- 8/29

Thank you so much for all the donations you have sent in over the past few weeks. The treasure box toys, candy, iTunes gift cards, and Kinkos gift cards are greatly appreciated!

Can you believe the first graders have been in school for 20 days? We celebrated the 20th day on Friday by enjoying zero shaped fruit loops from from Zero the Hero.

In language arts we will be reading The Big Blue Ox. While reading students will learn about setting. The setting of a story is where and when the story takes place. In grammar the students will identify the action part of a sentence or what adults know as the predicate. Students will be writing several sentences and identifying the action part of each. Our spelling pattern this week is short o as in pop. Please check the spelling tab for the list of spelling words.

The first graders will kick off learning about animals in unit study by being introduced to living and nonliving things. A living thing uses energy, grows, produces young, and responds to the environment. After learning the difference between living and nonliving things, the students will begin to learn about the six animal classification groups. *Parent Pop Quiz: Can you name the six groups of animals? If you listed mammals, arthropods, birds, fish, reptiles, and amphibians, you are right!*

We began introducing addition in math last week. Students will take a test on Tuesdayover the ways to make the numbers 6-10, addition sentences, adding in any order, and solving addition story problems. Students will then learn many addition strategies such as counting on and adding doubles. Soon students will be taking timed addition quizzes. Now is the time to begin practicing math facts at home. Rolling dice, playing cards, and online games are EASY and FUN ways to practice math addition and subtraction facts.
