I can't believe its already the last week of September! Thank you all for signing up for parent teacher conferences. A pre-conference questionnaire will be in your child's folder tomorrow for you to complete and return.
Last week we began our timed math fact sundaes. All the students earned their bowls, so everyone will take the +/- 1 test on Tuesday. Students need to answer 25 problems in 2 minutes to earn their spoon. They can do it!!
In reading this week we'll share the story Ronald Morgan Goes to Bat. It's a realistic fiction story with a determination and cooperation theme. Our comprehension skills will be character and sequence. In spelling this week we'll study contractions with not, are, will, is and have. We'll continue our noun study in grammar and explore singular and plural nouns.
In math this week it's mental addition strategies when adding 2 and 3 digit numbers. Students will practice counting on by tens, For example: To solve 37 + 40 students will skip count by 10's. Start at 37 and count on by 10s 4 times (since the number forty is 4 tens) 47, 57, 67, 77. We will also apply expanded form place value concepts to add mentally. For example 35 + 24. They can start at 35 count on 2 tens (45, 55) and then 4 ones 56, 57, 58, 59. Or students could mentally add the tens 30 + 20 and the ones 4 + 5 and add 50 + 9 to get 59. They will learn both methods. Another strategy is adding using patterns on a hundreds chart. Help your child solve these problems mentally on they're homefun this week. You're probably wondering when and if I'll teach them the column addition method we learned when we were in school. Don't worry that's coming next! The mental math strategies will help them with estimating and checking for reasonable answers, as well as prepare them to solve real world math problems quickly.
In unit study our rock explorations continue! We are learning about the 3 types of rocks and how they're made. We've learned that sedimentary rocks are formed by the pressure of layers of sediments like sand, mud, and pebbles. These rocks are typically found near water. This week we'll discover igneous or volcanic rocks, and metamorphic rocks, which heat and pressure have transformed into completely new rocks! We'll have a rock test at the end of the week. Students will bring home their rock graphic organizer to study from.
