I hope you all had a wonderful, yet rainy, Labor Day weekend and enjoyed the extra day off! This will be a busy and exciting four day week. We will begin Chinese language instruction this week. Our class times will be Tuesday at 8:55 and Thursday at 1:30.
This Friday is Grandparents Day. We are looking forward to having these special visitors, but we need your help to make this day a success. Please visit the class wiki @ http://ms-thompson.wikispaces.com/Grandparents+Day to see if you can sign up to bring anything.
While you are visiting the wiki for Grandparents Day, you may notice that you can go ahead and schedule your time for parent teacher conferences. This conference will be held the first week of October and is required for all parents. During this conference we will discuss your child's progress thus far and goals for the rest of the year. If you are unable to make any of the times listed, please email me so we can schedule something.
In unit study we will continue to study the earth's resources. Then we will explore the types of soil and even test their absorption.
We are moving on to a new unit in math. The students will be reviewing addition strategies. We will be focusing on a couple of strategies a day. The strategies we will be studying are make 10, counting up, doubles, doubles plus one, and adding zero and ten. Make sure that your child is practicing math facts strategies daily. After we review both addition and subtraction strategies we will begin taking timed math fact tests.

Wednesday, September 5- Field Trip permission slips and money due! Make sure to turn in a copy of your drivers license and insurance if you are chaperoning as soon as possible!
Friday, September 7- Grandparent's Day & Scholastic Books Orders due
Don't forget that field trip permission slips and money are due this Wednesday, and Scholastic book orders are due this Friday, September 7. If you are chaperoning, please make sure to complete the MCS background check and turn in a copy of your drivers license and insurance.
We are so close to reaching 100% participation in the CSPN support drive. I know we can do it!
This week in reading, the students will be reading the play, The Strongest One. It will be a great opportunity to practice fluency as the students get into character while reading the play. I know they will enjoy it! Our comprehension focus is theme. The spelling skill is consonant diagraphs. Consonant diagraphs consist of two or three letters put together that make a new sound such as -th, -wh, -ch, -tch, and -sh. Make sure to check the spelling tab for a list of spelling words.

ReplyDeleteLooks like our 2nd graders are having a fun-packed and educational week! Katie really enjoyed interviewing her grandparents for the Grandparents News assignment. I think the kids are looking forward to Friday's grandparent celebration!!
