Addition Strategies

Hi Parents! We wanted to share with you the two strategies we learned today for adding two-digit numbers. The strategies focus on the VALUE of each digit and reorganizing the problem so that it could be solved using mental math.

We will show you the first strategy as we solve 36 + 45.
Step 1: Add the value of the tens. So, 30 + 40 = 70
Step 2: Add the value of the ones. So, 6 + 5 = 11
Step 3: Add the two sums together. So, 70 + 11 = 81

You can see another example of this strategy by looking at J.T.'s work below!
Now, we will sovle the same problem using a different strategy.
Step 1: Keep the first addend the same and add the value of the tens in the second addend. So, 36 + 40 =76
Step 2: Add the value of the ones from the second added to the sum I just found. So 76 + 5= 81

Now, you can help me do my homefun tonight using these new strategies!!!
